In early August, the District 279 Foundation and Kidstop held the 12th annual Reading is Fun 5K. Though it was a rainy morning, more than 100 runners were committed to going the distance. All who participated in person and in spirit raised at least $8,000 that will go toward media centers across the district.

“We are truly grateful for the participants, volunteers and sponsors that made this family-friendly event possible. Nearly all our volunteers and sponsors that were planning to have a presence at the event still attended, which was amazing considering the weather,” said Susan Wineland, development director.

During 2022-23, each school will be able to use the funds to address the specific needs of their media center. Last year, Sally Lundeen-Hoff, library media specialist at Crest View Elementary School, diversified the book selection to better represent students. A third grade student excitedly showed her one of the new book covers and shared how it resembled clothing worn in her family.

“I want as many Crest View students as possible to feel excited, included and welcomed when they browse and read books in our media center,” shared Lundeen-Hoff.
