Reading is Fun 5K

Reading is Fun 5K

The District 279 Foundation and Kidstop will hold the Reading is Fun! 5K on Saturday, Aug. 6. This family-friendly event brings the community together for the love of reading and literacy, and all funds raised will be distributed to media centers to purchase resources and provide funding for educational programs.

“These funds are used to offer creative and innovative programming and to diversify the library collection. At Crest View Elementary School, we now have easels that are appropriately sized to display chapter books in our fiction and early chapter book sections. This change has contributed to students’ excitement about new titles and seems to be contributing to students exploring more genres,” said Andi Bodeau, coordinator of instructional media.

Each school uses the funds to address the specific needs of their media center. Fernbrook Elementary School used the money to create a weekly news show and Rush Creek Elementary School purchased a book vending machine which supports the PBIS program.

In a typical year, more than 300 people register and at least 600 people participate in this event. Event coordinators look forward to a big turnout again this year and are excited to bring the Reading is Fun! 5K back in person for the twelfth year.

“What I love about this event is it is really family oriented. It is one of the events where we see students come out with their parents, and the young ones are often really excited to get out there and run,” said Susan Wineland, development director.

The schedule will include a mascot race, 1K for younger students and a 5K. Individuals can register by the early-bird deadline, June 30. Those who register early will receive a dry-fit t-shirt. Additionally, volunteers are needed for various roles including preparation, mascot runners and station leaders.
